SF 19th Avenue Reopens—Next Closures Loom

19th Avenue in San Francisco reopened after early weekend repaving. More weekend lane shutdowns are planned, including May 8–11 and May 22–25.
SAN FRANCISCO — 19th Avenue in the Sunset District has reopened following weekend repaving work that wrapped earlier than expected, easing pressure for drivers heading to work.
The northbound lanes between Sloat Boulevard and Lincoln Way were closed Friday morning, then reopened Monday morning after crews finished ahead of schedule. The project targets a heavily used stretch that officials say had fallen into serious need of new asphalt.
For many people who live and commute on the west side, the timing matters.. Weekend closures change traffic patterns long before Monday morning. and even a “planned” reroute can feel disruptive when it turns a familiar drive into a slow crawl.. On days when the roadwork was active. travel along 19th Avenue brought traffic to a near standstill in parts of the Sunset.
Crews kept at least some access during the closure, with one lane open for locals, buses, and emergency vehicles.. Still. drivers were seen trying to bypass work zones—crossing through cones and even driving over fresh asphalt—an action that can create safety risks for both motorists and construction crews.
While the inconvenience is real. the underlying purpose of repaving is straightforward: pavement renewal is meant to reduce wear-related problems and improve ride quality on a corridor that sees frequent traffic.. For business owners and residents along the route. that tradeoff is often the deciding factor—some closures can test patience. but improvements can also help keep streets reliable for customers.
During the closure, businesses along 19th Avenue reported slowdowns and expect similar impacts as the project continues.. Tokyo Cream owner Thuy Linh Do said the community would adapt. emphasizing that residents and neighbors would still find a way to support local businesses even when access becomes more complicated.
Additional work is already on the calendar.. Caltrans scheduled another weekend repaving window for southbound lanes between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard during the weekend of May 8.. A final closure is set to begin May 22, affecting lanes in both directions between Sloat Boulevard and Holloway Avenue.
Under the plan released for the remaining phases. the southbound shutdown is scheduled for May 8–11. with a 70-hour closure from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard.. Then. during the Memorial Day weekend. May 22–25. Caltrans plans a 75-hour closure of both directions from Sloat Boulevard to Holloway Avenue.
Parking rules will also tighten during construction. Parking on 19th Avenue will be restricted within work zones, while side streets nearby are expected to remain available for motorists looking to avoid the heaviest congestion.
Caltrans is urging drivers to avoid the area during the upcoming closures and use alternate routes.. As the project moves through its final stages. the key for commuters may be simple: plan earlier than usual. expect delays where lanes narrow. and treat detours as temporary—not as optional shortcuts through active construction zones.
