SDP to Receive 23 ADC Defectors in Anambra, Says Chairman

The Anambra SDP says it plans to formally receive no fewer than 23 defectors from the ADC after a state congress in Awka.
A fresh round of political reshuffling is taking shape in Anambra, with the SDP signaling it will soon absorb new members from the ADC.
The Anambra State chapter of the Social Democratic Party said it is set to receive no fewer than 23 aspirants who have defected from the African Democratic Congress.. Prince Chinedu Ekwunife, the SDP chairman in the state, made the announcement on Monday shortly after the party held its state congress at the state secretariat in Awka.
Ekwunife linked the defections to the leadership crisis within the ADC, saying it has left many National and State Assembly aspirants unsure about their chances of contesting the 2027 general elections on the ADC platform.. He also pointed to the reported defection of Peter Obi from the ADC as a factor that has encouraged further movement, especially among those looking for a more certain platform.
In this context, the SDP move matters because defections often reshape how party structures form and how candidates plan their next campaign steps.
The SDP chairman added that his party believes it has been reinvigorated by its new leadership.. According to him, the SDP has started building and activating local government and ward structures across all 326 wards in the 21 local government areas of the state, describing this as part of a grassroots consolidation effort.
He further said the party’s state congress produced a new State Executive Committee through a consensus process. Misryoum reports that the event was monitored and supervised by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Awka office, including Nonso Okoli and Kingsley Ajunwa.
Ekwunife described the congress as peaceful and orderly, and conducted according to the party’s constitution and established guidelines. He also said he began his tenure with a weak organisational structure but emphasized that the SDP has made progress since then.
This is significant for voters because stronger internal structures can affect party outreach, candidate coordination, and how reliably election campaigns are run.
Looking ahead, Ekwunife said the SDP now has functional leadership across all 326 wards, naming ward chairmen, executives, and polling unit coordinators as part of the setup.. He said these structures are made up of individuals ready to mobilize and work toward electoral victories in the 2027 general elections and beyond.
At the end of his remarks, he reiterated the party’s focus on internal democracy, institutional stability, and strategic expansion as it seeks to position itself as a credible alternative in Anambra’s political landscape.. In the near term, Misryoum understands the planned intake of the ADC aspirants could become one of the sharper storylines to watch as parties firm up for 2027.
