Return and Earn gets a new home in Wollondilly

A new Return and Earn machine at Silverdale Shopping Centre is set to open on 24 April, replacing the Luddenham site and making recycling easier across Wollondilly.
A new Return and Earn machine is coming to Wollondilly, giving residents another convenient place to recycle eligible bottles, cans and cartons and claim their 10c refund.
The Silverdale Shopping Centre return point is expected to open on Friday 24 April. replacing the Ampol Luddenham machine that is scheduled to be removed after closing on Sunday 19 April at 10pm.. For Wollondilly residents. the change matters because it reshuffles a regular routine—where you take recyclables—into a new location that’s designed to be just as easy to use.
According to Misryoum, the Silverdale installation will become the fifth Return and Earn location within the Wollondilly Shire Council area.. That positioning is significant: more nearby machines typically reduce “friction” for people trying to stay on top of recycling. especially when eligible containers are collected across households and need somewhere reliable to be deposited.
The machine at Silverdale will be placed in the rear outdoor parking area. which Misryoum reports is intended to make it simple for locals to build Return and Earn into their weekly or daily errands.. The council’s broader interest in keeping return points accessible reflects the scale of container return activity in the area since the scheme began—over 64 million eligible bottles. cans and cartons returned through local points.
A key feature of the new system is the so-called “takes-all” technology.. Instead of requiring people to separate glass containers from plastic and aluminium beforehand. all eligible drink containers can be returned through any of the machine’s four chutes.. For residents. that reduces time spent sorting and lowers the chance that a container gets left out simply because it wasn’t pre-sorted.
Misryoum also notes that the refund process offers multiple options.. Recyclers can print a voucher at the machine and redeem it for discounts at Woolworths or for cash.. Others can choose an e-voucher. or receive payment directly to a bank or PayPal account through the Return and Earn app.. For many households. that flexibility can make refunds feel less like an administrative step and more like a straightforward outcome of recycling.
Beyond personal refunds, Return and Earn is also tied to community support in NSW.. Misryoum reports that recyclers can donate their refund to one of more than 500 donation partners listed in the app.. Guide Dogs NSW/ACT is one of the partners. with support aimed at helping people with low vision and blindness navigate their communities with confidence.. There’s also the option to donate to Jeans for Genes. supporting research into treatments and cures for children’s genetic conditions.
For communities and charities, this mechanism can add up quickly.. Misryoum highlights that Return and Earn has become a fundraising channel. with more than $91 million raised from donations and fees from hosting return points since the scheme launched in 2017.. At a statewide level. more than 15.6 billion drink containers have been returned for recycling across a network of over 660 return points. translating into over $1.5 billion in container refunds back to people.
Why does this new machine location matter for the bigger environmental story?. Container recovery schemes succeed when they make it easy to participate and hard to “opt out” through inconvenience.. By upgrading to a takes-all setup and placing the machine where people already park and shop. Misryoum suggests the system is being tuned for real-world behavior—not just theoretical recycling targets.. It’s a practical reminder that waste reduction depends as much on logistics and design as it does on public intent.
Misryoum adds a final practical note for anyone planning visits during the transition: the Ampol Luddenham machine is closing before removal. so Silverdale is the key new site once it opens.. Until then, the nearest alternate return point is the Ampol Wallacia machine at Lot 4, Silverdale Road, Wallacia.
In Wollondilly, the Return and Earn update is more than a new address—it’s a small infrastructure upgrade aimed at keeping recycling routines intact while reducing sorting effort and expanding how refunds and donations can be used.
