PS5 Linux – A PS5 modder has released a loader that can run Linux on certain disc-drive models with specific firmware versions.
Turning a PS5 into a Linux machine is no longer just a dream for tinkerers. A modder working under the name Andy Nguyen has published a loader that enables Linux to run on parts of Sony’s console lineup, positioning the PS5 as an unexpected playground for open-source software.
The project is available via GitHub and focuses on disc drive PS5 models running firmware in the 3.xx and 4.xx range.. Nguyen indicates that support for additional firmware versions may come later. but for now the effort is constrained to those specific conditions.. In a recent showcase, he demonstrated Linux running on the console, including a gaming example.
This kind of work matters because it shortens the distance between consumer hardware and experimentation, letting developers and enthusiasts test Linux workflows on systems that were never intended for them.
The timing also feels meaningful.. Misryoum has been noticing a broader shift toward Linux in both public institutions and tech circles. with more organizations and platforms exploring alternatives to Windows.. In gaming. Valve’s ongoing push around SteamOS continues to keep Linux on the radar. even if widespread mainstream adoption still faces practical hurdles.
It’s also worth remembering that the PS5 story echoes earlier chapters.. Misryoum notes that Sony previously enabled Linux on older hardware through a feature called OtherOS on the PlayStation 3 era.. That capability was later removed in a firmware update. which led to legal action and a settlement process tied to users who had been relying on that openness.
At the same time, the PS5 loader reinforces a recurring theme in consumer technology: when restrictions change, communities often respond with new ways to make devices do more than the original design allowed.
For now. Nguyen’s release is less about replacing existing operating systems and more about expanding what the PS5 can be used for..
