Prince Harry’s Reported Diana Project Threatens Hopes for Royal Reconciliation

Plans by Prince Harry to explore a project honoring his late mother are already drawing sharp skepticism from royal commentators, who warn the move could permanently derail any chance of reconciliation with his brother, Prince William.

Princess Diana died in 1997 at age 36. As the 30th anniversary of her death approaches on August 31, 2027, the Duke of Sussex has been considering several ways to commemorate her legacy. Sources indicated that Harry has explored the possibility of making a documentary and has reached out to friends and family members connected to his mother, though no film has been finalized or officially confirmed.

Royal broadcaster Helena Chard dismissed the idea of the project aiding family harmony. She characterized the potential film as a major provocation that would exhaust the Prince of Wales, who has consistently turned down offers to participate in documentaries about his mother. Friends of William noted that he prefers to mark the anniversary privately and simply wants to let his mother rest in peace.

Tensions between the brothers have remained deep since Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020. The divide widened significantly following a 2021 television interview with Oprah Winfrey, a 2022 Netflix docuseries titled “Harry & Meghan,” and Harry’s 2023 memoir, “Spare.” Sources close to the family confirmed that the brothers currently have no contact and have not spoken since 2022.

British royal expert Hilary Fordwich pointed out that the public disclosure of private family grievances and the monetization of royal connections have created a profound lack of trust that cannot easily be undone. Fordwich added that reconciliation could become even more difficult once William ascends to the throne.

Despite the friction, some insiders close to the family maintain that physical proximity during U.K. visits offers an opening to bridge the divide. One source suggested that Catherine, Princess of Wales, might eventually step in to encourage a healing of the relationship, recognizing how important family ties are to William. However, other royal experts noted that the Princess of Wales has shown no interest in getting drawn into the feud, choosing instead to focus on her immediate family and supporting the monarchy.

Meanwhile, King Charles is reportedly open to seeing his sons reconcile over time and welcomed news of Harry’s recent visits, which included spending time with the monarch at Highgrove House. While royal commentator Ian Pelham Turner suggested the king could potentially encourage William to reconsider his stance, he cautioned that the Prince of Wales remains steadfast in his position.

Additional strain could surface in July 2027, when the city of Birmingham, England, hosts the Invictus Games. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams noted that the sporting event, alongside the 30th anniversary commemorations later that summer, will serve as a crucial test for whether the royal family can navigate their differences or face an even deeper fracture.
