The Pentagon is moving to broaden the AI tools it can run inside classified environments, signing new agreements with major technology firms to deploy their AI capabilities on secure networks.
Misryoum reports that the U.S.. Defense Department reached deals with Nvidia. Microsoft. Amazon Web Services (AWS). and Reflection AI. enabling the use of their AI models and technology on the military’s classified systems for “lawful operational use.” The agreements are framed as part of a broader push to make the services “AI-first. ” with an emphasis on strengthening decision-making across different domains of warfare.
The timing also reflects how the Pentagon is restructuring its approach to AI vendors.. In the wake of its dispute with Anthropic over how its models could be used. Misryoum says the Defense Department has accelerated diversification efforts. aiming to reduce dependence on a single supplier and maintain flexibility for the broader “Joint Force.”

Misryoum notes that the Pentagon and Anthropic are in ongoing legal proceedings. with the dispute centered on the scope of permitted use and safeguards.. In operational terms. the Defense Department said the selected AI hardware and models will be deployed across Impact Level 6 (IL6) and Impact Level 7 (IL7) environments.. Misryoum describes these as high-security classifications for systems handling critical national-security information. requiring protections ranging from strict access controls to audits.
