Old Nintendo DSi Handhelds Find New Life With Streaming

A developer has bypassed the Nintendo DSi’s hardware limitations, using a new homebrew framework to stream desktop games to the 2008 handheld.

The Nintendo DSi has spent the better part of two decades as a piece of stationary nostalgia. relegated to the shelf once the march of modern hardware left it behind. For most, the 2008 handheld ceased to be a platform for new experiences years ago. But for a developer known as gavff64, the console’s age was merely a technical hurdle to clear.

The project, dubbed RNDS-Stream, turns the aging device into a portable monitor for a Linux PC. It works by decoding an MJPEG stream over a network. pulling content from an X11 or xWayland window directly onto the DSi’s dual screens. The result is a playable, if modest, frame rate of 15 to 20 frames per second. It is not designed for competitive e-sports—you won’t be climbing any leaderboards—but it is sufficient for casual sessions of games like Counterstrike.

There are current limitations to the workaround. Audio streaming has not yet been implemented, meaning the chaotic chatter of online multiplayer is absent. It is a quiet. solitary way to engage with modern software on hardware that predates the current era of high-definition streaming. The hack serves as a practical demonstration of RubyNDS, a custom Ruby-based homebrew framework built by the developer. When asked why the DSi and why Ruby, the answer is simple: because those are the things the creator likes.

This development is a notable outlier in the DSi’s history. While the console saw its first flash cart in 2008—the same year it was released—the platform has seen remarkably little homebrew activity, with the exception of specific augmented reality applications.

The code is now publicly available on GitHub under an MIT license. For those curious to see the DSi running modern desktop streams. a demonstration is available in a video clip online. beginning at the 4:48 mark. While the editing style of the footage leans into a high-energy. modern aesthetic. the substance of the project remains a direct. technical push against the obsolescence of older hardware.
