Nearly 11,000 register for Diacore Marathon as 2026 races plan takes shape

Registration for the 2026 Diacore Gaborone Marathon has closed, with 821 signed up for the 4km, 8,180 for 10km and 1,494 for the 21km. Winners’ prizes remain unchanged.
Nearly 11,000 runners have registered for the 2026 Diacore Gaborone Marathon, signalling another crowded and competitive edition.
The latest figures put the four-kilometre race at 821 registered runners, while the 10km distance has drawn the biggest turnout with 8,180 entries. The 21-kilometre half-marathon follows with 1,494 participants, and the full 42.2km marathon is set to start with a field of 356.
Marathon spokesperson Tshepiso Baipidi said registration for the 2026 event closed earlier than in previous years.. For the organisers, that shift is more than a logistical detail: it suggests growing demand for the Diacore Gaborone Marathon and a stronger pull for runners who begin planning months ahead.
Baipidi said registration opened in November 2025 and closed in January 2026.. She added that continued growth in international participation helps reinforce the race’s status as a premier marathon event in the region, especially as organisers work to meet the expectations that come with a larger and more diverse field.
From the race-day operations side, Baipidi said the event is on track for execution.. The organising team has been working across logistics, athlete coordination, route management and race pack preparations, with corporate race packages delivered directly to company offices two weeks before race day to reduce the pressure on day-of systems.
Individual race number collection is scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Baipidi said the process is designed to remain smooth and seamless, based on the planning and the systems already in place.
A notable theme in the 2026 build-up is timing: the edition aligns with Botswana’s Diamond anniversary celebrations.. Baipidi described the year as “particularly special,” pointing to enhanced race experience elements, a strengthened elite athlete field, and improved race-day organisation measures aimed at efficiency and athlete satisfaction.
There is also a practical change for the 10km, where the large volume of entries is expected to test start-line flow.. Baipidi said a new seeding system has been introduced, with the 10km seeded in three batches—A, B and C—to better manage the field, improve safety, and reduce congestion at the start.
For athletes, the prize structure remains the same as in 2025.. Winners in the men’s and women’s categories in the full marathon are set to receive P25,000, with silver medallists earning P15,000 and third place getting P10,000.. The half-marathon offers P15,000 to winners in both men’s and women’s sections, P10,000 for runners-up, and P5,000 for third-placed finishers.
The 10km prize money is also unchanged: winners in both the men’s and women’s races will take home P10,000, second place will receive P6,000, and third place earns P3,000.
Beyond the track, Baipidi said the Gantsi Youth Centre project is a central pillar of the Diacore Gaborone Marathon’s corporate social investment mandate.. The organisers report investing P574,043.46 into renovation works and landscaping, with the effort managed directly by their team to ensure the centre is fit for purpose and aligned with community needs.
The updated registration numbers and the added 10km seeding suggest the organisers are responding to the same reality many runners feel every year: the race is becoming more popular, and the experience has to keep pace.. With race-day planning already underway and collection processes set to run over two days, the coming weeks will show whether these adjustments translate into smoother starts—and a stronger overall event as the country marks a major milestone.
