Mother’s Day Heat Wave Hits SoCal After Drizzle

Cool coastal conditions give way to a late-week heat wave across Southern California, with Mother’s Day bringing triple-digit risk in valleys.
A cool, drizzly start is giving way to a dramatic swing in Southern California weather, with Mother’s Day weekend poised to feel markedly warmer.
Misryoum reports that Monday and Tuesday could bring areas of drizzle and light rain. especially near the eastern San Gabriel Mountains. the foothills. and parts of the Central Coast.. Conditions are expected to stay mostly subdued, with many places seeing little to no measurable rainfall.. Even where wet weather shows up, the broader picture is of cloudy, cooler days rather than a prolonged soaking.
The timing matters: a short-lived marine-driven chill can make a fast-moving warm-up feel more abrupt than usual for early May plans.
By the middle of the week, temperatures are expected to climb.. Wednesday marks the start of the warming trend. and Friday could bring the kind of heat that shifts daily routines. especially for outdoor activity.. On Mother’s Day itself. forecasts call for a meaningful chance of 90-degree temperatures in downtown Los Angeles. and warmer conditions across surrounding valleys.
Misryoum notes that the risk will not be uniform.. Inland areas are expected to heat up more quickly than the coast. with the Inland Empire approaching near-90 conditions and the lower deserts potentially reaching well above 100 degrees.. For San Diego’s valleys. highs are expected to land in the 80s. while the San Diego region overall may see more heat than the coastal areas.
This kind of ramp-up is exactly when public health messaging often becomes more important, particularly for children, older adults, and anyone with health conditions that can be affected by heat.
Heat concerns also extend to pets and livestock, with forecasts suggesting a moderate risk of heat-related illness in parts of Southern California during the hottest stretch. Temperatures in the Central Valley are also expected to rise into the 90s around the same period.
Meanwhile, the broader week still includes unsettled potential beyond Southern California.. There’s a chance of thunderstorms over parts of the Sierra Nevada and Central Valley on Monday and Tuesday. along with possible mountain snowfall in some higher passes.. In the Bay Area. light rain or drizzle may occur. with a higher likelihood of wetter conditions in the North Bay.
By the end of the week, California’s early-May warmth is expected to persist, underscoring how quickly weather patterns can shift from cool and gray to hot and dry. Misryoum emphasizes that planning for the warm-up now can help households stay safer and more comfortable as Mother’s Day approaches.
