Michael Carbonara targets Florida’s CD 22 after redistricting

Florida’s CD – Michael Carbonara moves his campaign to Florida’s 22nd District as new congressional lines reshape the race landscape.
A campaign strategy is being rewritten in real time in South Florida, after Florida’s redistricting process reshuffled who each candidate may ultimately face.
Republican Michael Carbonara says he is moving his candidacy to Florida’s 22nd Congressional District following passage of a new congressional map.. The shift changes his political target: rather than challenging U.S.. Rep.. Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Carbonara would be aiming at a seat without a clear natural incumbent advantage under the newly drawn lines.
In announcing the move, Carbonara framed it as more than geography, arguing that the core of his candidacy remains tied to the community he says he wants to represent. He also renewed an election-year message aimed at Democrats and their policy agenda.
This matters because redistricting can quickly alter the “who you run against” question, forcing campaigns to pivot on everything from fundraising assumptions to voter outreach plans.
Under the prior configuration of Florida’s congressional map, U.S.. Rep.. Lois Frankel, a Democrat from West Palm Beach, represented CD 22.. With the new map approved but not yet signed by Gov.. Ron DeSantis. more of Frankel’s existing territory is expected to fall into Florida’s 23rd District. leaving CD 22 in a different political position than it occupied before.
Wasserman Schultz, for her part, indicated she plans to seek re-election, but has not said where she intends to run. That uncertainty keeps the broader contest fluid, especially as candidates weigh how quickly voters and party organizations will align with the post-redistricting map.
Carbonara said he is still prepared to face Wasserman Schultz even with the revised boundaries. He also argued that the new district lines could bring electoral advantages that were not available under the earlier map.
The proposed CD 22 is geographically expansive. stretching from the Marco Island area in Southwest Florida toward the Atlantic coast. and including communities such as Wellington and Belle Glade.. The district’s interior also encompasses areas associated with Ave Maria. Immokalee. and Big Cypress National Preserve. underscoring how campaign outreach may require broader logistics than a more compact district.
On the campaign finance front, Carbonara reported raising more than $2.5 million through March.. He ended the first quarter with just over $633. 000 in cash on hand. while Wasserman Schultz’s reported cycle total was slightly lower.. As the map’s final status and filing decisions come into focus. the race could become a test of whether campaign resources and messaging can match the new district shape quickly enough.
In the end, the most immediate impact of redistricting is not abstract: it determines which voters are in play and which incumbents carry the institutional weight of their districts, reshaping the battleground calculations for both parties.
