Meta and Partners Launch Protocol to Standardize AI Agents
Personal Agent – Meta, Sierra, and industry partners are introducing an open standard to allow personal AI agents to interact securely and efficiently with business websites and APIs.
The familiar friction of the digital world—loading pages. clicking through forms. or waiting on hold for customer support—is the latest target for automation. As personal AI agents move from novelty to necessity. handling tasks from scheduling appointments to shopping for car insurance. they are hitting a wall. They currently struggle to navigate the internet the way a human does. often failing to complete tasks that feel like they should take seconds.
Meta and Sierra are moving to bridge that gap with the launch of the Personal Agent Protocol. Developed alongside industry partners including Genesys. Instinct. Rocket. Shopify. Stripe. and Walmart. the initiative aims to create an open standard for how these agents interact with businesses. The goal is to move beyond the current “screen-scraping” model and establish a secure. direct line of communication that offers companies visibility into the actions these agents take on their platforms.
At the core of the design is a balance of competing needs. Consumers demand speed and trust, wanting an agent that acts in their best interest. Brands require control, needing to know exactly who is interacting with their systems and what permissions they hold. Meanwhile. the companies building these agents are searching for efficiency and a consistent technical framework to replace the fragmented. unreliable methods currently in use.
Operationally, the protocol is built on OAuth, the industry-standard framework for authorization. When an agent visits a site, it can begin as a guest to check simple information like return policies. If a task requires account access, the user can sign in or use pre-existing credentials. The framework allows for varying levels of control, with users granting agents either read-only or write access. From there. the agent can navigate via three routes: the company’s existing website. direct connections through APIs built on standards like MCP and OpenAPI. or communication with a company’s own internal agent for complex tasks like warranty claims.
This is a collaborative rollout. Instinct has joined the effort, and the developers plan to publish the v0.1 specification later this month. Following the release, the group will host design workshops and provide a reference implementation to help developers begin the integration process.
Looking further ahead, the protocol is designed to evolve. The roadmap includes more granular permissions to set limits on specific actions. push notifications to alert agents about flight delays or shipping updates. and payment extensions that would allow for purchases without the need to share credit card information directly. By establishing this foundation now. the coalition hopes to provide a secure environment where personal agents can act on behalf of their users without compromising the trust or security of the brands they serve.
