Mercedes-Benz Confirms ‘Baby G-Wagon’ Launch Within Two Years and Adds Hybrid Option

Mercedes-Benz has officially confirmed that its highly anticipated compact off-roader, widely known as the “Baby G-Wagon,” is on track for a commercial release within the next two years. Company leadership revealed that the vehicle’s announcement in 2023 generated an immediate wave of inquiries from prospective buyers eager to know when it would hit the market, prompting intensive development efforts. While initial official teasers surfaced earlier, the exact timeline had remained unconfirmed until now.

Positioned within the manufacturer’s compact vehicle lineup, the new model shares a similar footprint with existing vehicles such as the GLA, GLB, and CLA. However, engineers have elected to break from standard platform conventions. Rather than utilizing Mercedes-Benz’s MMA modular architecture, the compact off-roader will feature a dedicated ladder-frame chassis. This deliberate engineering choice is designed to preserve genuine off-road capability, serving as a direct nod to the non-load-bearing body-on-frame tradition of the full-sized G-Class.

Powertrain strategy for the vehicle has undergone a notable shift in response to market conditions. Mercedes-Benz initially intended to offer the compact model exclusively as a battery-electric vehicle. That plan was reassessed following the disappointing market performance of the larger electric G580 with EQ Technology. The full-sized electric G-Class carries a starting price of $162,600 and offers an EPA-estimated range of 204 miles, or approximately 328 kilometers, with real-world highway testing yielding roughly 160 miles, or about 257 kilometers. Internal admissions from corporate executives described the rollout as struggling, which, combined with pressure from American dealerships and a slower-than-expected expansion of public charging infrastructure, drove the decision to incorporate a hybrid option for the smaller sibling.

Despite the addition of a hybrid variant, electric configurations remain a core part of the rollout. The pure electric version is expected to utilize a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive layout paired with an 85-kilowatt-hour nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack, targeting a projected range of up to 724 kilometers. The newly introduced hybrid variant is anticipated to feature an electrified 1.5-liter engine similar to the unit slated for the CLA. Regardless of whether a buyer selects the electric or hybrid powertrain, a four-wheel-drive system will come standard to maintain the vehicle’s rugged pedigree.

Styling cues captured in recent winter testing spy shots indicate that the compact vehicle will heavily mirror the iconic aesthetics of the larger G-Class. Test mules display the signature boxy silhouette, flat body panels, high-set window line, circular LED headlamps, low-mounted taillights, and a rear-mounted spare tire. Inside the cabin, the vehicle is expected to integrate Mercedes-Benz’s latest generation of digital technology and driver-assistance displays, offering a commanding driving position elevated above standard urban crossovers and an interior layout tailored for outdoor utility.

Market pricing for the compact off-roader is anticipated to start around $70,000 in the United States, representing a significant discount compared to the full-sized G-Class, which commands a starting price of $153,900. In international markets like China, the vehicle is expected to arrive via import channels, with the pure electric variant scheduled to debut first, followed shortly by the hybrid version.
