May to open wet and windy as storms hit southern Australia

May storms – A low-pressure system is bringing rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to southern Australia as temperatures cool.

A wet, stormy start to May is on the way, with rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms expected to roll across southern Australia and break a recent spell of warm, dry weather.

Misryoum reports that a low-pressure system is driving the change, ushering in a cold front and trough moving from west to east. As it advances, showers and thunderstorms are forecast to spread across a wide part of the south, with conditions likely to shift quickly from one region to the next.

The timing looks sequential: southern Western Australia is set to see impacts first, followed by South Australia later. Over the weekend, wet weather is expected to extend further to Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

This kind of weather pattern matters because front-driven storms can develop rapidly, bringing sudden changes in visibility, road safety risk, and localised downpours.

Rain will not be uniform across the affected areas, with totals expected to vary. Some places could see higher falls where thunderstorms strengthen, while wind is also expected to increase ahead of the front.

As the system moves through, north to northerly winds are forecast to give way to cooler west to south-westerly conditions.. Misryoum notes that damaging gusts are possible in parts of South Australia and western Victoria on Saturday. with the threat extending to higher areas of eastern Victoria and parts of south-east New South Wales on Sunday.

For many communities, that wind risk is the key story, since gusts can worsen storm impacts even when rainfall is less severe than expected.

Temperatures are also expected to ease as the front passes, with cooling across much of the south.. Adelaide is forecast to drop after reaching the high 20s earlier in the week. while Melbourne is expected to cool from the mid-20s on Friday to the low 20s by Sunday.. Hobart and Canberra are also expected to trend downward into early next week.

By Monday and into Tuesday, the overall message from Misryoum is clear: the month begins with a noticeable shift from dry warmth to wetter, windier conditions, and then a gradual return to more settled temperatures.
