Mass. Officer on Leave Over Domestic Violence Allegations

Massachusetts officer – A Massachusetts police officer was suspended and charged after allegations involving a gun, threats, and substance abuse concerns. Misryoum reports.

A Massachusetts police officer is facing criminal charges after allegations that he threatened his wife with a gun, while police say substance abuse was part of the picture.

Suspension and charges follow domestic violence allegations

Shrewsbury police suspended Shawn Valliere, 53, and the case has now moved into the criminal system. According to court records cited in a police statement of facts, Valliere faces two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault on a family member.

Police say the allegations include an especially alarming claim: Valliere allegedly put a gun into his mouth and asked his wife to pull the trigger.. Investigators also described claims that he held her at gunpoint and threatened to shoot her. framing the alleged conduct as connected to an escalation that unfolded during a domestic dispute.

What investigators say happened in the home

The investigation began, police said, after a detective in Millbury received an email on April 16 from an anonymous sender.. The message. police wrote. expressed concern for Valliere’s wife and described Valliere as “very dangerous. ” including allegations that he was using cocaine again and had previously threatened her with a gun.

Officers went to Valliere’s Millbury home to discuss the accusations, the statement of facts said.. Police wrote that Valliere invited officers inside and told them he was going to rehabilitation for mental health.. When officers asked about drug and alcohol use. Valliere denied abusing alcohol or cocaine. and he also denied the most graphic allegation involving a gun inside his mouth.

Wife’s account and fears about reporting

While Valliere denied the key allegations, police reported that his wife described the account as accurate. She told investigators, police wrote, that “the entire story was true,” including the claim that the gun-in-mouth scenario occurred while she was leaving the apartment after an argument.

According to the statement of facts, the relationship between the couple had grown tense enough that, in the wife’s account, living with Valliere had become difficult because of his alcohol consumption. She also told police she did not know whether he was using cocaine.

Police said the fear was not theoretical. The wife described being afraid to “lose her family if she reported [the incident],” a detail that reflects a pattern often seen in domestic violence cases—when victims weigh safety against social and personal consequences.

Administrative leave, gun confiscation, and watchdog action

The allegations also triggered immediate steps by law enforcement. Shrewsbury police confiscated Valliere’s guns on April 15 and placed him on administrative leave, according to the statement of facts.

Shrewsbury Police Chief Kevin Anderson said in a Facebook post that Valliere’s certification with POST—the state’s independent police watchdog—was also suspended.. The chief said the department takes the allegations seriously and remains committed to transparency, accountability, and maintaining community trust.

That matters because, in cases like this, public confidence often hinges on how quickly a department responds and how thoroughly it separates internal discipline from the criminal process.

Why these cases draw national attention—and what happens next

Domestic violence involving law enforcement is always treated as a heightened concern. largely because officers carry training. access to weapons. and—sometimes—authority that can affect how threats are perceived and whether a victim believes escape is possible.. In this case. the alleged use of firearms and the claim that Valliere pointed or threatened his wife underscore why investigators took the matter seriously from the start.

For the community, the question now becomes how the legal system will sort competing accounts.. Valliere has denied some of the allegations described by police. while the wife’s statements. as summarized in the record. align with the most serious claims.. A criminal case will determine what can be proven beyond accusations.

In the near term. the wife’s safety and access to support services are likely to be central concerns. even as the case moves forward.. In the longer term. departments and oversight bodies will continue to face scrutiny about policies for handling domestic violence risks among their own. including how quickly weapons are removed and how supervision works when the allegations involve an active or recently placed-on-leave officer.

The next steps will depend on proceedings in court—whether prosecutors pursue each charge aggressively and how any evidence about threats, weapons handling, and the alleged role of substances is presented. For now, Misryoum reports that Valliere remains suspended while the case plays out.
