Martha Stewart Faces Backlash After Dressing as Homeless Person for Halloween

Lifestyle mogul Martha Stewart has sparked widespread condemnation and bewilderment from longtime followers after sharing a Halloween costume on social media that portrayed a homeless person. Known globally as a tastemaker of gracious living with an estimated net worth of $400 million, Stewart posted an image on Instagram featuring herself with gray makeup smudged on her face, ripped jeans, a sliced white cardigan, and a clipboard bearing the message, “I Am Hungry Help Me!!”
The post drew immediate criticism for its tone-deafness at a time when many Americans face severe economic struggles to afford basic necessities like groceries and fuel. Adding to the controversy, the photograph also displayed two flawlessly groomed purebred dogs—a French bulldog and a Chow Chow—posing alongside her. Furthermore, the offending image was part of a carousel post promoting her QVC candle collection, which she advertised as “perfect for Halloween!!!”

Just days prior to the incident, Stewart appeared on NBC’s “Today” show on Oct. 30 in an Olympics-themed couples costume alongside co-host Craig Melvin, who dressed as Snoop Dogg. However, her Halloween social media post quickly drew intense backlash, prompting her to delete the original publication.
Stewart subsequently issued two separate apologies. In her first statement to NBC News on Sunday, she said, “I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention.” Later that evening, she followed up with a more direct mea culpa on Instagram, writing, “It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry.”

The misstep left fans and cultural observers questioning how an enterprise built on discerning good taste from tackiness could let such a blunder pass unchecked. Followers questioned how a prominent public figure with an extensive professional team and close circle could publish the image without pushback, with commenter Jamie M. Timbre writing on Instagram, “Hundreds of people on your professional team, as well as countless friends… no one warned you? I mean I’ll always love ya girl, but whew.”
