Marine Corps Marathon Route Secure Despite Planned Golf Renovations

The Marine Corps Marathon will proceed as planned this October, despite concerns over potential redevelopment at East Potomac Golf Links.
For the thousands of runners heading to the start line this October, the course remains unchanged. Despite growing anxiety over the future of East Potomac Park and the potential redevelopment of the East Potomac Golf Links. race organizers have confirmed that the Marine Corps Marathon will proceed through Hains Point exactly as mapped.
“Our partners have been telling us that the construction is not going to be affecting our race whatsoever. So we are all in the clear,” said Amber Traunero, marketing, media, and sponsorship manager for the race.
The event, set for October 26, includes both the marathon and a new 8K race the day prior. For many participants, the stretch near Hains Point serves as the emotional heart of the course. Known as the “Wear Blue Mile. ” this section begins at mile 12 and honors fallen service members with photos and dates of death placed every few yards.
While this year’s path is secure. the threat of a Trump administration-backed “champions-style” golf course remains a point of contention for local advocates. D.C. Shadow Sen. Ankit Jain is actively opposing federal funding for the project. pointing to contracts currently listed on government websites and a presidential request for $450 million to support a sea wall project in the area.
David Hearn, a former U.S. Olympian and frequent user of the park’s trails. joined others this past weekend in a rally to keep the space accessible. Hearn. who recently saw his legal case regarding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool dismissed with prejudice. emphasized the personal importance of the park. “Through all of the trials and tribulations for me over the past four months. I was able to ride my bike every day. and I know for a lot of people coming out here is a great way to relieve stress as well. ” he said.
As the administration moves forward. having awarded a contract last month for environmental and historic compliance and posting a new construction contract for bidding. the marathon’s leadership is beginning to look ahead. Traunero noted that contingency planning for 2027 is already underway. If the park were to close. organizers say they could adapt by pulling from previously certified course maps—such as those used for their past 50-kilometer events—or potentially extending the route through Rock Creek Park to maintain the required 26.2-mile distance.
For now, the focus remains on the upcoming race weekend. “Whether you’re running the marathon or the 8K, we’re still going on as planned,” Traunero said.
