Manchester United Captain Bruno Fernandes Criticizes Defensive Tactics After 4-1 Champions League Defeat to Como

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes delivered a scathing assessment of his side’s tactical setup and mental fragility following a 4-1 Champions League thrashing at the hands of Como on Wednesday. The lopsided defeat extended Manchester United’s winless run to seven matches and intensified the pressure surrounding manager Michael Carrick.
Como stunned the visitors by opening the scoring in just the second minute of the match. The early strike triggered a severe collapse from the English side, who found themselves thoroughly outplayed throughout the evening. A stoppage-time consolation goal from Joshua Zirkzee served as the only minor relief for United on a night where the scoreline could have been even more punishing.
Speaking to broadcasters after the final whistle, Fernandes pointed directly to the team’s passive strategy as a primary cause of the collapse. He noted that the squad failed to apply sufficient pressure on the ball and lacked movement off it, allowing Como to dictate the rhythm of the game.
“It’s a decision from the coaching staff not to press man-to-man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them, but sometimes when you give space to these teams they get confidence,” Fernandes said. When asked specifically if his remarks constituted a critique of Carrick’s tactical decisions, the midfielder added that evaluating the approach was the responsibility of the manager and his staff, while emphasizing that players needed to show more bravery.
“Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable,” Fernandes said. Beyond the tactical layout, the captain expressed deep concern over the psychological state of the squad after falling behind early in the contest, noting that conceding in the opening minutes plunged the team into a damaging “mood of defeat.”
Manager Michael Carrick acknowledged the severity of the performance and accepted the blame for the team’s downward spiral. The 45-year-old manager admitted that the display fell far below acceptable standards for the club.
“It was more than disappointing,” Carrick told broadcasters. “I think everybody’s got to take responsibility for that. I’ll take responsibility for the overall team and performance; it stops with me, and I’m fine with that. But as a supporter of this football club, to see a performance like that is unacceptable, I have to say.”
Carrick highlighted a glaring deficiency in his players’ application, pointing to a lack of basic competitive drive and urgency on the pitch. He noted that the team failed to produce the motivation, purpose, and intensity required in elite European competition, prompting him to issue a direct apology to the club’s supporters.
The heavy defeat leaves Manchester United with three points from their first three matches in the Champions League group stage. The club will attempt to steady its European campaign when they host AS Roma in their next fixture in the competition.
