Malkin says he’ll play elsewhere if Penguins don’t re-sign

Malkin Penguins – Evgeni Malkin says staying with the Penguins is his first choice, but he’ll consider another NHL team if a new deal isn’t reached.

Evgeni Malkin has made his next step clear, insisting that Pittsburgh remains his preferred destination but admitting he is open to wearing a different NHL jersey if talks do not result in a re-signing.

Speaking at the Penguins’ end-of-season availability shortly after Pittsburgh’s Round 1 exit at the hands of the Philadelphia Flyers. the 39-year-old stressed that his aim is to continue in the same organization he has represented throughout his NHL career.. Misryoum reports that Malkin understands the business side of negotiations and suggested a change of scenery is possible if the club decides to move in a new direction.

Insight: Even without making a hard demand, Malkin’s message matters because it sets the tone for a summer decision that could reshape the Penguins’ core.

Malkin is set to become a pending unrestricted free agent this summer after spending 20 seasons with the Penguins.. He also pointed to the value he places on the group he has built with Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang. both of whom are under contract for next season.. For Malkin, another year together is a key motivation as he weighs what comes next.

Misryoum notes that the Penguins’ early playoff elimination only sharpened the question of who stays and who moves. particularly for veteran leaders whose chemistry has defined recent seasons.. Malkin said he is not looking to return to the KHL and instead wants to keep playing in the NHL. if it cannot be with Pittsburgh.

Insight: From a roster-building perspective, veteran continuity is often as important as individual skill, and this is exactly where Malkin’s decision could carry weight.

While injuries affected him during the season, Malkin still played a meaningful role as Pittsburgh regained a spot in the postseason. He said he feels he can be ready for next year and plans to take time to rest before getting back to work early.

Crosby, for his part, sounded reflective about the future.. The captain indicated he is approaching his own status on a year-to-year basis. and he will “wait and see” regarding any extension.. Misryoum adds that with the captain still under contract for one more season. the question of how long this leadership group remains intact remains central to Pittsburgh’s summer.

Insight: The Penguins now face a pivotal offseason where negotiations with star veterans could determine both immediate competitiveness and long-term identity.
