President John Dramani Mahama has officially broken ground for the Green City Housing Project at Dedesua in Kumasi, describing the initiative as a major milestone in Ghana’s efforts to provide affordable and dignified housing for citizens.. Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, President Mahama said the project forms part of government’s broader housing agenda under the Reset Agenda, which seeks to transform housing delivery, infrastructure development, and economic opportunities across the country.. He noted that Ghana’s
housing deficit, estimated at over 1.5 million units, demands urgent and decisive action in the face of rapid urbanisation, rising construction costs, and limited access to affordable financing.. According to the President, decent housing should not be treated as a privilege for a select few but as a fundamental right for all citizens.. President Mahama outlined a number of housing interventions being pursued by government, including the completion of the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project, district-level
social housing initiatives, and a low-cost housing scheme for public sector workers being developed in partnership with organised labour and financial institutions.. He also announced plans for a GH¢3 billion revolving housing fund involving government, organised labour, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), and financial institutions to support long-term mortgage financing for workers.. The President explained that houses under the scheme would be priced in cedis instead of dollars to protect homeowners from
exchange rate fluctuations and improve affordability.. He further reiterated government’s commitment to reforming the rental housing sector to ensure fairness, affordability, and dignity for tenants nationwide.. President Mahama commended Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for making available the 200-acre land for the project.. The Green City Housing Project is expected to deliver more than 1,000 housing units within an integrated and environmentally sustainable community in Kumasi.
