A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Eastern Samar on Monday, sending tremors through communities in the region and beyond.
The quake hit about nine kilometers northwest of San Julian at 2:09 p.m., according to Misryoum. The shaking was reported as shallow, with a depth of 10 kilometers.
For many residents, the event was felt across several provinces, with intensities ranging from moderate to light depending on location.
Misryoum noted that intensity reports can help explain why some areas experienced stronger shaking while others felt only minor tremors.
In Eastern Samar, Can-Avid recorded intensity 5, while Dulag and Alangalang in Leyte also logged intensity 5. Gandara in Samar showed intensity 5 as well.
Leyte and parts of Samar saw intensity 4 in areas including Abuyog, Palo, and Carigara. Meanwhile, Naval in Biliran and Hernani in Eastern Samar were among the places that reported intensity 3.
Elsewhere, intensity 3 was also noted in multiple areas across Leyte, including Ormoc City and several nearby towns, along with parts of Southern Leyte such as Hilongos, Albuera, Baybay, Villaba, and Isabel, plus locations in Sorsogon.. Light shaking of intensity 2 and 1 was also reported in additional areas, including parts of Cebu, Masbate, and Davao Occidental, among others.
Misryoum said residents should be mindful that conditions after strong shaking can change quickly, especially as the initial quake is followed by further activity.
In a statement shared through Misryoum, the advisory warned that damage and aftershocks are expected. Authorities and residents are urged to stay alert for updates as the situation develops.
The way an earthquake is felt across a wide area is a reminder that even when an epicenter is localized, impacts can ripple outward, affecting everyday life far beyond the nearest coastline or town.
