Lox in a Box Team Closes Bondi Bistro After Six Months

Bistro Bondi, the first project by the Lox in a Box team, has closed after a brief run, with owners pointing to an unresolved landlord dispute.

A Bondi bistro that opened last November with big summer plans has already gone dark, with the Lox in a Box team announcing the closure of Bistro Bondi after just six months.

Set on Warners Avenue, the restaurant was the group’s first venture and leaned into a European menu, drawing on influences spanning Spain and France, alongside nods to Poland and Germany.. Led in the kitchen by ex-Ester and Poly chef Isabelle Caulfield, it arrived with dishes that were designed to feel both familiar and adventurous, from anchovy-topped latkes to steak frites.

In a statement shared by owner Candy Berger, the closure was framed as something separate from the restaurant’s on-the-ground performance.. Berger said it was “not about the performance of the Bistro,” adding that it would have been easier to process the shutdown if it had simply failed to find an audience.

Meanwhile, Berger pointed to the circumstances behind the decision, saying the bistro’s doors were closed early because of an ongoing dispute involving the hospitality team and the landlord. Because discussions are still active, she declined to provide specifics.

Misryoum understands the latest chapter is not just a business setback but also an emotional one, with Berger describing the effort poured into the site and the staff who helped build it.

According to the statement, Bistro Bondi had been bustling and full, and had quickly turned into a local go-to. The dining room’s details helped set that tone, from café de Paris butter prawns to a Lox in a Box Green Goddess for dipping and swiping.

The drink list was also positioned as a draw in its own right, featuring a 70-bottle wine selection by Jaymie Wallace, alongside a set of high-energy cocktails, including a bright blue “Bondi Blue.”

Berger described the experience as painful, saying the team had invested heavily into the space and had spent a lot of time, care, and belief on making it work.. She added that she is not someone to walk away, but that continuing would come at a cost she said was too high for health, peace, wellbeing, and the team.

A previous arrangement in the group’s orbit, operating from a neighbouring space as Greenbergs, has also been tied to the same landlord-related conflict, according to the account shared by Misryoum.

For diners, the timing is likely to be the hardest part: the final service at Bistro Bondi took place in mid-April 2026, bringing an unexpectedly short run for a venue that had been gaining momentum.. In the wider restaurant world, Misryoum notes, closures like this underscore how quickly even popular places can be reshaped by factors that sit well beyond the kitchen.
