UK officials raised the terrorism threat level to ‘severe’, citing violence and arson targeting Jewish sites, and signaled new anti-proxy powers.
London’s streets are once again at the center of a major UK security shake-up after a stabbing and a string of attacks targeting Jewish people and sites prompted the government to lift the terrorism threat level to its second-highest setting.
In a statement carried by Misryoum, the UK Home Office said the threat level is now “severe,” meaning an attack is “highly likely” within the next six months. The move also follows what officials described as ongoing concerns tied to antisemitic violence.
This matters because the threat level is more than a label. It typically changes how authorities plan resources, patrols, and protective measures, signaling that officials see a nearer-term risk.
Before Thursday’s decision, the threat had been rated “substantial,” where an attack is considered “likely.” Misryoum reports that this lower level had been in place since February 2022.
Alongside the change in threat assessment, the government is planning new legislation aimed at countering state-sponsored threats.. Officials say the focus will include the use of proxies linked to foreign states, with proposals that would treat certain proxy activity in a similar way to working for foreign intelligence.
Security concerns have intensified, according to Misryoum, as ministers and officials argue that criminal networks or people with existing grievances can be drawn into hostile activity.. The government’s approach also comes after criticism from Jewish community figures and the Israeli government over recent attacks in Britain, especially in London.
Why this shift is significant is that it highlights a broader strategy: addressing not only direct attacks, but also the systems that, in the government’s view, can funnel violence through intermediaries.
Misryoum also notes that past cases cited in the context of these concerns include charges under the UK’s National Security Act related to alleged hostile surveillance tasks and convictions connected to arson attacks on businesses linked to Ukraine.
On funding and protection, the interior minister said additional resources would support security for synagogues, schools, places of worship, and community centers, and help increase police presence in areas with large Jewish communities.. Misryoum reports the government is also pointing to education efforts and measures meant to tackle antisemitism across parts of public life.
At the end of the announcement, Misryoum reported that ministers did not rule out designations involving specific state-linked groups, adding that decisions may be made soon.. Ultimately, the message from authorities is that the current environment requires both immediate protection and longer-term legal tools.
