The creative output from Liz Harris is moving at a relentless pace. Just last week. the musician marked the return of her shoegaze trio. Helen. by releasing their first full-length album in 11 years. titled Linda’s Head. Today. the focus shifts back to her solo work with the announcement of a new project. Music for Two Films About Water. arriving November 27 via the label kranky.
The collection consists of two long-form instrumental compositions designed to score short films centered on the theme of water. The second track, a 22-minute piano piece written for Takashi Makino’s film Constellation, is available to stream starting today. Makino’s work utilizes the arrangement of memories. existing images. and fragments to explore how new meanings can emerge as these elements appear and vanish within shifting. mercurial water textures.
The album’s opening track, ‘Untitled (from We Exhale)’, originates from a different creative origin point. It serves as the score for Tanja Engelberts’ film We Exhale. a project that adopts the perspective of the Rhône River. The film tracks the river’s physical evolution, documenting the toll taken by human intervention, including pollution, damming, and channeling.
This release highlights the stark contrast in Harris’s recent projects: the sudden revival of a decade-dormant band balanced against the deliberate, solitary focus of long-form film scoring.
