American Airlines Commits Entire Mainline Fleet to SpaceX Starlink

American Airlines plans to outfit over 1,030 aircraft with Starlink connectivity by 2027, signaling a major shift in the race for in-flight internet dominance.

When passengers board American Airlines flights in the coming years. the persistent struggle for a stable connection above the clouds may finally be over. The carrier confirmed its plan to equip its entire mainline fleet—a total of more than 1. 030 narrowbody and widebody aircraft—with SpaceX’s Starlink Wi-Fi. The rollout is set to begin next year. promising speeds reaching up to 1Gbps through the satellite network’s Performance Aero Terminal.

This move represents a massive expansion of the company’s previous commitments. As recently as May, the airline had targeted only 500 aircraft for the upgrade. By deciding to outfit the entire fleet. American is shifting its trajectory to accommodate its more than 165 million annual customers. aiming to provide a level of reliability that previous in-flight systems could not match.

The decision marks a clear pivot for the airline. which just last year struck a deal with AT&T to bring high-speed Wi-Fi access to AAdvantage loyalty program members. With this new. comprehensive integration of Starlink. the airline is betting that satellite-based connectivity is the future standard for long-haul and regional transit.

This agreement puts SpaceX at the forefront of a highly competitive market. despite the company losing out to Amazon Leo for a major contract with Delta earlier this year. While the Amazon-backed service is not slated to begin its rollout until 2028, SpaceX is rapidly scaling its presence. Starlink currently operates on 724 United Airlines aircraft. accounting for approximately 41 percent of that carrier’s fleet. and has secured partnerships with 48 airlines globally.

As the industry moves toward these unified satellite systems, the landscape for cabin connectivity is consolidating quickly. With the 2027 deadline in place for the full American fleet. the airline is positioning itself to be a dominant player in the satellite Wi-Fi race. leaving the limitations of older. ground-based systems behind.
