Lindsey Vonn targets first steps at Met Gala

Alpine legend Lindsey Vonn says she aims to walk without crutches at the Met Gala, months after a major Olympic crash.
Lindsey Vonn’s comeback plan is being measured not in race times, but in steps.
Three months after a serious crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics left her with a complex leg injury. the skiing icon has set a clear recovery milestone for the Met Gala.. Vonn says she is working toward taking her first steps without crutches during the high-profile event. framing the walk up the venue’s iconic staircase as the “light at the end of the tunnel” of her rehabilitation.
Her goal is specific: from the start to the top of the stairs. she wants to manage the climb without crutches. calling it a “huge win” if she can do it.. The skier also acknowledged that the recovery process is still physically and mentally demanding. describing herself as being in “survival mode” as she continues intensive therapy.
For Vonn, this matters because it turns rehabilitation into something the public can rally behind, offering a rare glimpse at what returning from elite-level injury really looks like day by day.
The injury she suffered in Italy on Feb.. 8 was severe enough to raise fears of amputation, with Vonn later facing multiple fractures and a demanding medical road ahead.. She has undergone eight surgeries so far. and she indicates at least one more procedure is needed to address a torn ACL in the same knee.
Meanwhile, Vonn’s Met Gala focus arrives after she suggested she could still be drawn back to skiing despite mounting concerns. In recent remarks, she said her father may have “jumped the gun” with urging her to stop, adding that she wants to ski regardless of whether it becomes competitive again.
That tension between passion and caution is central to her story right now. While the medical timetable remains the deciding factor, setting a walking goal at a cultural spectacle highlights how progress can be made in stages, not only in terms of performance.
Even with a history of major setbacks and prior injuries, Vonn says this one was different, noting the pain and the scale of treatment required. For now, her sights are set on a single, difficult staircase and the first steps that would symbolize a major shift in her recovery.
