A Learjet carrying nine people crashed into a residential neighborhood in Greenacres, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, according to federal aviation authorities.
The Federal Aviation Administration stated that the Learjet 60 went down at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time. The aircraft had originated at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was en route to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
Emergency personnel responded to the crash site, where video footage captured active flames, thick black smoke, and wreckage strewn across a local roadway. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue announced the closure of Military Trail to all traffic between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North, characterizing the emergency response as an “extended incident” and advising the public to steer clear of the vicinity.
Authorities have not yet released information regarding the conditions of the nine individuals who were on board the flight.
The FAA cautioned that all details released immediately following the accident are preliminary and subject to revision as investigators examine the evidence. Oversight of the inquiry will be handled by the National Transportation Safety Board in coordination with the FAA, with the NTSB slated to spearhead the investigation and issue subsequent updates.
Law enforcement and transportation officials continue to urge motorists to avoid the crash zone and select alternate travel routes while emergency crews and federal investigators work at the scene.
