Kwanza Jones and José Feliciano Buy Padres for $3.9B

Princeton alumni Kwanza Jones and José E. Feliciano have purchased the San Diego Padres for a record-breaking $3.9 billion, signaling a new chapter for the franchise.
When Kwanza Jones and José E. Feliciano arrived at their latest venture. they brought the same ethos that defined their early days as undergraduates at Princeton: a relentless need for commitment. That shared history has now culminated in a record-breaking $3.9 billion purchase of the San Diego Padres.
For the couple, this deal is more than a business transaction. It is an extension of a partnership that has seen them invest $20 million in 2020 to support Princeton’s undergraduate expansion and fund the university’s first buildings named after Black and Latino donors. As they step into the world of Major League Baseball. they are leaning on the grit and resilience that characterized their journey together. “Princeton is where our journey together started. so there is something pretty special about arriving at this moment together. ” they shared. “Hard work. grit and resilience have gotten us through a lot together. and we are bringing that same mindset to the Padres.”.
The transition to professional sports ownership is not entirely new territory. Feliciano. who co-founded Clearlake Capital. was part of a consortium led by Todd Boehly that purchased the Premier League club Chelsea F.C. in 2022. Earlier this month. Clearlake took full ownership of the club after purchasing the stakes held by Boehly and fellow co-owner Mark Walter. It is an experience that has taught them the unique gravity of sports investments. where the line between owner and community often blurs. “One thing you learn pretty quickly in sports is that these are not like other businesses,” Feliciano noted. “Fans care deeply. The community cares. And whether you win or lose, it is always ‘we’ because you are in it together.”.
Building a winner in San Diego will test that philosophy. The Padres currently face a steep climb in the National League West. a division dominated by the rival Los Angeles Dodgers. While the Dodgers have secured the division title 15 times since 2013—every year except for 2021—the Padres have remained a consistent playoff threat. reaching the postseason in 2022 and 2024. including an appearance in the 2022 National League Championship Series.
Maintaining that competitive edge will depend on the existing leadership, including President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller. Known for his aggressive pursuit of elite talent through trades. Preller now has new ownership that expresses a willingness to listen. The couple plans to lean on the expertise already present in the organization. acknowledging that while they intend to challenge conventional wisdom. they also recognize the value of letting good people perform their roles.
That vision extends to the fans at Petco Park. which has consistently ranked in the top five for attendance since the 2020 COVID-shortened season. Jones, the founder of the organization SUPERCHARGED, brings a focus on philanthropy and solution-building to the team. “I want us to listen to the fans. connect with them and find ways to build on what is already here. ” she said. “No one succeeds alone.”.
The financial stakes are high, particularly as the league faces potential labor tensions regarding the Collective Bargaining Agreement. With owners pushing for a hard salary cap similar to the NFL or NBA. the economic landscape for MLB franchises is shifting. Despite the uncertainty, the couple remains undeterred. They have pledged their time. financial resources. and a long-term strategic vision to the team. beginning with their first opportunity to witness the Padres in the best-of-three Wild Card round.
