Korle Bu doctors suspend strike after talks

Korle Bu doctors have suspended their strike after talks, with hospital management assuring laboratory physicians will return to work.

A strike that had only just started at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital was quickly called off after talks between doctors and hospital management.

Doctors at the facility suspended their industrial action just hours after it began, following assurances intended to reduce tensions in the hospital’s central laboratory. The Korle Bu Doctors Association announced the decision after a meeting on Monday morning.

The association said management had committed to ensuring laboratory physicians return to work, framing the suspension as a step toward restoring normal operations.

In this context, the message is less about ending a dispute outright and more about keeping day-to-day healthcare functioning while discussions continue.

As part of the agreement, doctors were asked to resume out patient services from Tuesday, 5 May. The brief strike had raised concerns about possible disruption at Ghana’s largest referral hospital.

The association also emphasized the need for cooperation between laboratory physicians and medical laboratory scientists, saying peaceful coexistence matters for delivering quality patient care.

That focus matters because laboratory coordination often sits at the heart of timely diagnosis and treatment, so even short interruptions can ripple through patient services.

Meanwhile, the association indicated it would continue engaging management as work continues to address the underlying issues within the central laboratory.

At the end of the day, the suspension is expected to ease pressure on patients who rely on Korle Bu for specialist care, while negotiations play out behind the scenes.
