Israeli Authorities Question Flotilla Activists After Interception

Gaza flotilla – Two activists from a Gaza-bound aid flotilla were taken to Israel for questioning after interception in international waters.

A Gaza-bound aid flotilla has triggered a new diplomatic flashpoint after Israeli authorities took two activists into custody for questioning, following an interception in international waters of the Mediterranean.

Misryoum reports that Israeli authorities said they were transferring Palestinian-Spanish activist Saif Abukeshek and Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila to Israel.. The pair had been part of the Global Sumud Flotilla’s steering committee. an effort organized to challenge what organizers describe as Israel’s naval blockade and to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinian territories.

The interception involved dozens of participants and multiple boats, with Israeli forces acting off the coast of Crete. Misryoum reports that activists said their vessels were boarded during the overnight incident, and that engines were damaged before detainees were taken.

In this context, the central dispute is not only about the aid route but also about where legal and operational lines are drawn when vessels are stopped far from shore.

According to Misryoum, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said it was taking Abukeshek and Ávila to Israel for questioning. Officials characterized Abukeshek as suspected of affiliation with a terrorist organization and Ávila as suspected of illegal activity, without detailing supporting evidence.

Misryoum also reports that most of the flotilla’s participants were released in Crete late Thursday. while some boats continued toward Gaza.. Organizers say the latest attempt grew from an earlier effort that drew broader attention. including high-profile international supporters. and ended with participants being detained and deported.

Meanwhile. the flotilla’s departure from Barcelona earlier this month underscored the political pressure surrounding the effort. with organizers describing a large international turnout and additional boats joining along the route.. The Greek government also said it offered to help with disembarkation and repatriation. while protests in several capitals reflected growing public concern.

For governments and advocates, the decision to detain and transfer activists rather than resolve the situation locally is likely to shape how future maritime aid efforts are planned and how international pressure is applied.

Spain and Brazil have not publicly commented in detail on the transfer. but Misryoum reports they. along with other nations. said the interception in international waters and the detention of activists amount to serious violations of international and humanitarian law.. At the same time. Israel has maintained that its actions were necessary and that it acted before the flotilla entered Israeli waters.
