Homicide Investigation After Death of Ste. Anne Chef

Misryoum reports a weekend slaying in Ste. Anne is being investigated as homicide after a well-known chef and volunteer firefighter died.

A well-known chef and volunteer firefighter has died in a weekend incident that authorities are now treating as a homicide, leaving Ste. Anne and nearby communities reeling.

In the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne, about 50 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg, officers were called to investigate an aggravated assault. A man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died, with Misryoum reporting that the case is under homicide investigation.

The person identified by friends and former colleagues is 49-year-old Cameron Huley, a figure who was widely known not only for his culinary work, but also for showing up for others in everyday ways.

That mix of public-facing professionalism and community service is often what turns a tragedy into something felt far beyond one neighborhood. When a person is present in kitchens and emergency response alike, the shock spreads quickly.

Friends described Huley as gentle and approachable, someone who could easily connect with people and make others feel welcome. Misryoum notes that he catered a local wedding in 2021 and remained actively involved in community life.

He also volunteered with the Town of Ste. Anne fire department and previously served as an auxiliary police officer with the Ste. Anne Police Department. Ste. Anne Police Chief Marc Robichaud said Huley’s loss is significant for both the police department and the wider community.

In this context, the investigation is not just about determining what happened, but also about protecting the sense of safety that volunteer-led communities depend on.

Huley’s career in food spanned more than two decades. with experience that included competitions and work across restaurants and country clubs.. Misryoum further reports that he was involved in la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. serving as a board member for the Canadian chapter and participating as a judge for events.

As investigators work to piece together the circumstances, the community’s focus remains on the person behind the role: a father, an outdoorsman, and someone described by those who knew him as the kind of figure people admired and remembered for their kindness.

Ultimately, Misryoum observes that cases like this test how closely communities hold together in grief, especially when the victim was a familiar presence in both celebration and service.
