Hantavirus Suspicion Halts Dutch Cruise as Ship Waits

hantavirus outbreak – A Dutch cruise vessel off Cape Verde is seeking help after deaths and serious illnesses linked to suspected hantavirus.
A Dutch cruise ship adrift in the Atlantic is seeking urgent medical assistance after a suspected hantavirus outbreak onboard left three people dead and others seriously ill.
Misryoum reports that the MV Hondius, carrying about 150 passengers, requested help from local health authorities after reaching Cape Verde.. Officials say no one was permitted to disembark. while medical teams assessed symptomatic individuals onboard and coordinated next steps for possible evacuation.
This is a reminder of how quickly remote outbreaks can become a logistical crisis, especially when a ship is far from ports equipped to manage high-consequence infectious diseases.
According to Misryoum. the first death was a 70-year-old Dutch man who developed fever. headache. abdominal pain. and diarrhea before dying onboard as the vessel was near the British territory of Saint Helena.. His body was removed from the ship and was awaiting repatriation.. A 69-year-old Dutch woman who was later transferred to South Africa collapsed at an airport in Johannesburg and died at a nearby hospital.
Meanwhile, Misryoum reports that the ship then sailed toward Ascension Island, where a British man was taken off and later tested positive for hantavirus. He was described as being in critical condition and in intensive care in South Africa under isolation measures.
The stakes in cases like this are twofold: treating individuals in danger and preventing further exposure among passengers, crew, and potential contacts in places the ship may have touched.
Misryoum also notes that the World Health Organization said several other cases were suspected to be hantavirus but not confirmed by testing.. WHO said it is working with local authorities and the cruise operator to carry out a full public health risk assessment. including additional laboratory work and epidemiological investigations.
For now. two crew members remain onboard and need urgent medical care. the operator said. with local health authorities still weighing whether transfers can take place in Cape Verde.. The Dutch Foreign Ministry has confirmed two victims were Dutch and said it is exploring evacuation options for other people.
While hantaviruses are rare and typically spread through contact with infected rodent material. the unusual conditions of an enclosed setting far from medical resources can complicate everything from diagnosis to containment—making coordination essential even when broader public risk is assessed as low.
Hantavirus infections are known for causing serious illnesses, and Misryoum reports that authorities say there is no specific cure. Separately, health officials in South Africa have conducted contact tracing in the Johannesburg area to identify whether others may have been exposed.
As the ship waits for decisions on medical evacuation and next steps, Misryoum says health authorities are also emphasizing that panic is unnecessary, focusing instead on careful assessment and targeted response to limit further spread.
