The partnership. launched in January 2025. is designed around a simple idea: make donating “win-win” by pairing the act of giving blood with additional. health-focused testing.
For Goodlabs CEO and co-founder Grant Brewster, the effort is personal.. He says a rare iron-related condition left iron silently building up in his organs. and that donating blood was part of how the iron was managed.. Over time. Brewster said he grew frustrated by the extra steps he had to take to get iron levels tracked by other medical providers. including additional appointments and needle sticks.. His solution was to build a pathway where donors can get certain lab insights as part of the donation process.
This matters because blood shortages can become a persistent public health challenge, and programs that reduce barriers while encouraging new donors may help strengthen a system that depends on regular participation.
The program begins with donors creating an account through Goodlabs’ website, where they can select from different panel options.. Misryoum reports that offerings include broader wellness-style testing that may cover items such as blood sugar and cholesterol. along with more targeted panels focused on areas like hormones or nutrients.
On donation day at the Centreville center. the blood collection is conducted through the same needle used for the donation. with the testing handled afterward through partner lab work used by physicians for routine evaluations.. Results are then made available on the Goodlabs platform a few days later. and the company says the platform is designed to help donors interpret what their values may mean. not just whether they fall within typical ranges.
This approach matters because it aims to reach people who may not be able to afford standalone testing, potentially turning a single appointment into both a donation and an added layer of health visibility.
Misryoum reports that the platform also includes options for care navigation calls.. If results raise concerns, donors can be directed into Inova’s primary care or urgent care networks for follow-up.. Goodlabs says it is also working on telemedicine integration that would allow donors to connect with a doctor quickly.
The partnership arrives as demand for blood remains steady nationwide, while donor participation can fluctuate.. Misryoum notes that Brewster frames the need for new donors as ongoing, with seasonal patterns that can intensify shortages.. He also points to examples of people who learned something important through donation-linked testing and adjusted their health decisions accordingly.
