Ghana Police Interdict Officers in Viral Mining Videos

Misryoum reports Ghana Police interdicted five officers after viral videos allegedly showed misconduct at an illegal mining site.

Viral videos are now driving a serious disciplinary move within Ghana’s police ranks.

Misryoum reports that the Ghana Police Service has interdicted five personnel after they were captured in footage circulating online, with the Service saying the conduct damages its reputation.. The videos, shared on social media, are alleged to show officers at an illegal mining site where suspected galamsey operators were being stopped.

In the footage described by the Service, the officers are reported to have demanded money instead of enforcing the law.

This kind of allegation matters because public confidence in policing often hinges on how reliably officers act in the field, especially in high-pressure contexts tied to illegal activities.

According to a statement released on Monday, May 4, the affected officers have been removed from active duty. They were also referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau for investigation as the Service pursues its internal processes.

Misryoum understands the Police framed the action as an interdiction of personnel “sighted in viral videos” engaging in acts that tend to put the Service into disrepute. The statement also indicated that disciplinary handling will follow established internal procedures.

The Service named the officers: Chief Inspector Matthew Blay, Chief Inspector Francis Arthur, Inspector Eric Osei of the Osu Police Station in Accra, Sergeant Amos Dery of the National Protection Unit, and Inspector Joseph Okyere Asabre of the Obuasi Police District.

Meanwhile, Misryoum notes the next step is the investigation by the Professional Standards Bureau, which will determine how the allegations should be addressed.

For residents watching these developments, the outcome will be closely tied to whether accountability is seen to be real and consistent, not just promised.

In reaffirming its stance, the Ghana Police Service said it remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and public trust as investigations continue under its disciplinary framework.
