Florida State Leadership Meets to Weigh Future of Head Coach Mike Norvell

Florida State University leadership is actively meeting to discuss the future of head coach Mike Norvell following a turbulent stretch that reached a breaking point over the weekend. The discussions come in the wake of the Seminoles’ 34-26 loss to the Clemson Tigers, a defeat that dropped the program’s record to 10-22 since the beginning of the 2023 campaign.
Frustration among the fanbase and university stakeholders has steadily mounted. During Saturday’s game against Clemson, public discontent spilled over when an airplane flew above the stadium carrying a banner demanding the firing of Norvell and Peter Collins. The airborne protest featured a noticeable spelling error and drew public criticism, including a remark from Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney.

The current scrutiny marks a stark turnaround for a program that enjoyed an undefeated regular season under Norvell during the 2023 campaign, though that run ultimately concluded with a loss in the Orange Bowl. High expectations heading into subsequent seasons have gone unmet, leaving the fanbase on edge and leadership facing intense pressure to address the team’s ongoing struggles.
Ahead of the Clemson matchup, Florida State President Richard McCullough addressed the mounting anxiety directly in an open letter to the university community.

“I know some of you are questioning whether university leadership understands the seriousness of this moment, whether meaningful action is taking place behind the scenes, and whether there is a clear plan for the future,” McCullough wrote in the correspondence.
“Let me be clear: the leadership team and I care deeply. And we are methodically working on a plan that positions Florida State for sustained success,” the president added, closing the letter with a direct acknowledgment of stakeholder standards: “We are not asking you to lower your expectations. We are telling you that we share and embrace them.”
As university officials continue their evaluations following the latest setback, no final decisions regarding Norvell’s position have been formally announced.
