Emmys Abandon Broadcast Television for Prime Video in 2027
Emmys move – The Emmy Awards are leaving traditional broadcast television for a six-year streaming home on Prime Video starting in 2027.
The rotating carousel of the Emmy Awards is finally stopping. After seven decades of jumping between ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, the ceremony is settling into a dedicated, permanent home on Prime Video starting in 2027.
Amazon announced the deal on Tuesday, signaling the end of the show’s traditional broadcast era. For the next six years, the ceremony will stream live across more than 240 countries and territories. The platform is opening the event to a global audience. allowing even those without an Amazon Prime subscription to watch the broadcast for free.
Financial terms of the agreement remain undisclosed. but the pivot to a streaming-first model reflects the shifting reality of television viewership. The 78th primetime Emmy Awards, hosted on NBC, saw a nearly 10% drop in ratings compared to the previous year. While the 6.87 million viewers who tuned in for the most recent broadcast marked an improvement over the January 2024 all-time low of 4.3 million. the decline underscores a fragile landscape for legacy award shows.
Television’s biggest night is merely the latest to exit the terrestrial stage. The migration to digital platforms has become an industry standard; the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences secured a deal to move the Oscars to YouTube starting in 2029. and the Screen Actors Guild Awards have been streaming exclusively on Netflix since 2024.
By moving away from the fragmentation of rotating networks. the Emmy Awards are betting that a singular. global digital destination can stabilize an audience that has increasingly moved away from scheduled broadcast slots. The move effectively trades the reach of traditional cable for the ubiquity of a global streaming infrastructure.
