Emmy Awards Abandon Traditional Networks For Prime Video Streaming

Starting in 2027, the Emmy Awards will shift to a permanent home on Prime Video, ending the long-standing broadcast network rotation.
For decades. the Emmy Awards were the crown jewel of the broadcast network calendar. rotating annually between ABC. CBS. FOX. and NBC. That era of traditional television dominance concludes in 2027. Under a new six-year deal with the Television Academy, Prime Video will become the exclusive global home for the ceremony.
Amazon is committing between $20 million and $25 million per year for the rights to host the telecast. The shift is historic; the Emmys are now the first major entertainment awards ceremony to move exclusively to a streaming service. beating the Academy Awards. which transition to YouTube in 2029. to the digital-only finish line.
Despite the move to a subscription-based platform, viewers will not need a Prime membership to watch. Amazon plans to host the stream for free across more than 240 countries and territories. Beyond the main gala. the agreement may open the door for additional Television Academy programming to reach Prime Video. such as the Hall of Fame ceremony. However, questions remain regarding the future of the Creative Arts Emmys, as its broadcast home has yet to be determined.
There is a quiet irony in the industry’s most prestigious television awards leaving the airwaves just as streaming services have fully captured the medium’s creative output. This year’s top honors for best drama and comedy series went to *The Pitt* and *Widow’s Bay*—both exclusive to streaming platforms. The industry that once defined the network model has now officially outgrown it.
