Eddie Speir to stay in Florida’s CD 16 amid map shift

Eddie Speir says he will keep running in Florida’s 16th District despite DeSantis redistricting reshaping parts of it.
A Florida redistricting shake-up has not changed Eddie Speir’s plans: the Republican congressional candidate says he will remain in the race for Florida’s 16th Congressional District even after the new map reshuffled nearby boundaries.
Speir. a Manatee County Republican. said he is disappointed that the updated district lines would move part of the old Florida 16 into the new Florida 14. but added that he has made his decision to continue campaigning in the seat voters will see on Election Day.. His remarks come as Gov.. Ron DeSantis’ proposed congressional map redraws the political landscape for candidates hoping to succeed retiring Rep.. Vern Buchanan.
The move matters because redistricting often forces candidates to decide quickly whether to follow the voters they know or chase a different district where the field may be thinner.
For months. Speir has been positioning his candidacy around the successor race tied to Buchanan’s retirement. while the new boundaries raise questions about whether he would shift toward the Tampa-centered district now represented by Democrat U.S.. Rep.. Kathy Castor.. That speculation intensified after the map proposal placed a sizable portion of the former Florida 16 into the new Florida 14.
Speir said he did consider running in other districts created by the new map. including Florida’s 13th and 17th. but chose not to enter contests that would mean challenging incumbents.. He also pointed to discussions with GOP members—Anna Paulina Luna and Greg Steube—indicating that those representatives plan to seek the same numbered seats under the revised lines.
Still, Speir’s decision does not remove him from a competitive Republican primary.. He is expected to face Sydney Gruters. a candidate with Trump’s endorsement and a high-profile political connection through her spouse. RNC chair Joe Gruters.. Speir framed the contest as a contrast between what he described as grassroots energy and the “establishment. ” arguing voters will have a clear choice.
Under the revised district configuration. CD 16 is described as remaining anchored around Manatee County. while also incorporating parts of south Pinellas County and eastern Sarasota County.. The boundaries extend east to cover all of DeSoto and Hardee counties. setting up a new coalition of voters for candidates to reach.
At the same time, Speir still faces additional Republican challengers in the primary, including Ed Pope and John Peters.. While Speir noted earlier fundraising momentum. the reality of Florida’s primary calendar and filing deadlines means the final competitive picture will depend on how quickly the field consolidates support across the newly drawn geography.
This is the kind of intra-party reshuffling that can shape more than a single race: when maps change, campaign strategies, local networks, and voter outreach often have to be rebuilt under tighter timeframes, even for candidates who decide to stay put.
