“Our thoughts and prayers are with our two students and their families.”
A driver is charged with attempted murder after hitting two Bridgewater State University students with a vehicle Saturday morning, university officials said.
Video footage shows the driver intentionally struck two students on Burrill Avenue near the Moakley Center academic building, Bridgewater State University said in a statement.
One student suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment and remained hospitalized as of Sunday night, the school said.
The second student sustained only minor injuries, the university said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with our two students and their families,” Bridgewater State University President Frederick W. Clark Jr. said in a statement sent to all students and staff on Sunday morning. “We remain in contact with the family of our student who is hospitalized and are optimistic about her recovery.”
The driver, a man in his early 40s from East Weymouth whose name has not yet been released publicly, was arrested by Bridgewater State University police and transported for a psychiatric evaluation. He was charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of reckless operation of a motor vehicle, one count of leaving the scene of personal injury, and a marked lanes violation, according to the university.
The driver has no affiliation with the school, and evidence does not indicate he targeted these students specifically, although he was involved in an earlier road rage incident in East Bridgewater, the school said.
The investigation into the incident by university police is ongoing, with accident reconstruction assistance from Bridgewater police.
