Como Seize Control Against Manchester United in Historic Champions League Clash

Manchester United faced an uphill battle in northern Italy as Como seized a commanding two-goal lead early in the second half of their Champions League encounter at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. Tasos Douvikas struck just four minutes after the restart, firing past the visitors to double Como’s advantage on a heavily rain-soaked evening on the shores of Lake Como.
The breakthrough for the hosts arrived early in the match. Just two minutes into the contest, Nico Paz collected the ball, squared up Harry Maguire, shifted onto his left foot, and curled a precise effort into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area to put Como ahead. The early strike set the tone for a dominant first-half display by the Italian club, who are contesting the biggest game in their history during their debut Champions League campaign.

Manchester United struggled to find a foothold in the opening forty-five minutes, managing only a handful of attacks compared to sustained pressure from the hosts. Manager Michael Carrick made a double substitution at halftime, introducing Amad Diallo and Carlos Baleba in place of Matheus Cunha and Andrey Santos, but the tactical adjustment failed to stem Como’s momentum immediately.
Como controlled possession for long stretches under heavy rain, with Paz, Martin Baturina, and Lucas Da Cunha continually asking questions of a makeshift United defense. Matthijs de Ligt returned to the United starting lineup for his first appearance since November of the previous year, partnering Maguire at the back, while goalkeeper Senne Lammens was called upon repeatedly to keep the deficit manageable with saves against Baturina and Douvikas.
United’s best moments in the first half were scarce. Matheus Cunha registered a curling effort onto the roof of the net after turning on the left edge of the area, while Diogo Dalot missed an early opportunity following a loose bounce inside the box. As the match progressed past the hour mark, Carrick’s side faced mounting pressure to respond in worsening weather conditions.
