Commanders Add Veteran Coach Steve Wilks to Assist With Weekly Game Planning

The Washington Commanders have added experienced defensive coach Steve Wilks to their staff to assist coaches during the weekly preparation cycle. Operating under head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Daronte Jones, Wilks arrived at the facility to contribute specifically to game-planning efforts. His weekly schedule sees him come into the building on Sundays and depart following the conclusion of practice on Wednesdays.

Club officials initiated discussions regarding the position before the current season began, and the hire was not made in response to any recent on-field developments or performance issues. Wilks officially assumed his duties with the organization last week.

Wilks brings an extensive coaching background spanning both professional and collegiate levels. Most recently, he served as the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets last season until his departure in December. Prior to his stint with the Jets, he spent the 2023 season as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, helping guide the team to an appearance in the Super Bowl.

His resume also includes head coaching experience at both the professional and collegiate tiers. In 2022, he took over as the interim head coach of the Carolina Panthers following the firing of Matt Rhule, steering the club to a 6-6 record over the remainder of the campaign. Earlier in his career, he served as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals during the 2018 season.
