A fishing trawler partially sank after hitting a rock in Barkley Sound. Misryoum reports crews recovered people and continue monitoring possible fuel release.

Crew members aboard a fishing vessel were rescued last week after their vessel hit a rock and partially sank.. After hitting a rock in Barkley Sound, fishing vessel Northern Challenge, an 11.5-metre (40-foot) fishing trawler, became partially submerged.. The Coast Guard vessels CCG Cape Sutil and Bamfield 1 responded to the incident site, which a Tseshaht First Nation beach keeper identified as near Dodd Island.. Two people were reportedly rescued from the vessel, which according

to the Canadian vessel registry is registered in Victoria.. The Canadian Coast Guard’s response to the incident is ongoing.. Their Marine Environmental and Hazard Response teams worked with partners to determine the best way to recover the boat and assess the damage to the environment.. As of May 6, the Coast Guard had the vessel at a dock where it is wrapped in tarp and surrounded by floating barriers to contain and absorb any fuel

still being released from the boat.. “A small amount of light sheening has been observed, however there is no indication of an active release at this time,” the Coast Guard told the Alberni Valley News in an email statement.. “The Canadian Coast Guard will continue to monitor the site and take appropriate action as required to protect the marine environment.” They added that the owner of the vessel is required to pay the costs of

pollution response and cleanup and that the organization will take every step to make sure the appropriate responses are taken and that costs are recovered.. No injuries were reported among those aboard the boat when it hit the rock, the Coast Guard added.
