A smartphone stays out of students’ hands for most of the school day, yet the academic payoff may be smaller than many advocates expected.

New research reviewed by Misryoum finds that school cell phone bans can meaningfully reduce phone use during class while supporting students’ reported well-being.. But the same policy shift does not appear to lift average test scores or improve attendance records. suggesting the relationship between digital access and learning outcomes is more complicated than a simple cause-and-effect story.

In the study. schools that required students to keep smartphones in magnetically sealed pouches—devices could not be unlocked until the end of the school day—were compared with other schools that did not use pouch enforcement.. Misryoum notes that the analysis tracked outcomes using multiple data streams. including academic performance. attendance. discipline records. GPS-based location information. and surveys of both students and teachers.

Insight: If phone restrictions mainly change students’ immediate environment and habits, that can improve how students feel without necessarily changing how much they learn on standardized measures or how often they attend.

The findings also point to short-term disruptions after implementation.. When pouch rules were introduced. some indicators of school discipline moved in the opposite direction. with suspensions rising and reported well-being falling at first.. Over time, those patterns did not persist: discipline appeared to settle closer to earlier levels, while well-being rose.

Another element Misryoum highlights is that concerns about online bullying did not show clear improvement in the measures used. The study reports no meaningful change in students’ perceived levels of online bullying, even where phones were effectively locked away during the school day.

Misryoum also points out that the researchers flagged important limitations.. Test scores and survey responses may not capture every outcome that schools care about. and the post-adoption window was relatively short for judging longer-run effects.. The team also noted that schools use different kinds of phone restriction policies. which could produce different results than the pouch approach.

Insight: This matters for policymakers because it supports a more cautious approach to digital rules in schools, focusing not just on whether phone use declines, but on which specific student outcomes are actually moving—and why.

As more places consider or adopt restrictions on student smartphone access. Misryoum says the next step is likely careful comparison of different policy designs over longer periods.. Done well. that can help schools align their goals—well-being. behavior. academic progress. and safety—with strategies that have evidence behind them. rather than relying on expectations alone.
