Cavalcade draws cheers as thousands wave around the island
Thousands of islanders lined the coast for a vehicle cavalcade, with riders describing a joyful tribute and hands-on interest.
Greeted by thousands of islanders around the coast, those riding along with the vehicles said they could not stop smiling.. Two of those were Maria Chamberlain and Oleg Mikhailov.. Mr Mikhailov, from Russia, is involved in an exhibition locally.. ‘I’m a journalist and I was writing about the Liberation and interviewed Shane Le Page, which is when he invited us to join him for the cavalcade,’ said Ms Chamberlain.. ‘Mine and Oleg’s grandfathers both served
in the war and had similar bikes, so this is like a tribute to them.. ‘It really was a one-of-a-kind experience, everyone was so happy and waving, my face hurts from smiling so much, I don’t think I’ve been that happy since I was a child.’ Also joining the parade was former West Show president Mark Le Prevost, on his 1968 Massey Ferguson, decked out in flags.. ‘I really enjoy being a part of it,’
he said.. ‘It’s especially nice to see the older generation alongside the road because they’re the ones who remember it.’ Taking round an M5 international half track tank was 13-year-old Carter Bourgaize.. ‘It was great stopping and Pembroke and getting a walk around of all the vehicles,’ he said.. ‘It was something I was interested in and then through my dad was able to join in.. ‘It’s really nice to see all the people around
the island waving.’ Nathan Machon was in charge of the vehicle.. ‘This one has been specced up for the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers,’ he said.. ‘It’s equipped with tooling and recovery equipment to enable repairs to vehicles and different equipment.’ As usual, the cavalcade ended along the town sea front for people to have a look around the range of vehicles.
