Camaro Found in Maine Lake After Decades

1974 Camaro – A 1974 Chevy Camaro was pulled from Sebago Lake after years underwater, prompting an investigation into how it sank.

A 1974 Chevrolet Camaro surfacing from the depths of Sebago Lake in Maine has turned an ordinary day of exploration into a real mystery.

Misryoum reports that underwater explorer Jason Smith spotted the car roughly an hour from Portland. about 55 feet below the surface. while searching for a snowmobile he’d seen on a previous trip.. The footage he shared shows a Z28 model, recognizable by its stripes, rear spoiler, and 15-inch wheels.. While Smith did not capture the vehicle’s RPO codes. investigators are treating the details as key to understanding exactly which Camaro it is.

In this context, the most startling part is how quickly time becomes a question. A car that’s been underwater for so long doesn’t just disappear quietly, which is why investigators are focusing on what could have led to the drop.

According to Misryoum, Smith alerted the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office after discovering the Camaro.. The car was recovered. but several clues were missing or unclear: its license plates were gone. the windows were open. and the trunk contained only parts of an old tent.. Investigators then searched for identification by locating a partial VIN and bringing in the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to help reconstruct the car’s history.

As Misryoum notes, the vehicle appears to have not been registered in decades. And after a salvage crew pulled it up, the long period submerged took its toll, with the Camaro breaking apart as it was brought to the surface.

This matters because gaps in records often point to bigger gaps in the story, especially when a vehicle ends up in water in a way that seems out of place for the location.

Investigators are also weighing where the Camaro was found within Sebago Lake.. Smith said he located it near the channel that separates Frye Island from the mainland. which sparked early speculation about whether it could have come from a ferry.. But Misryoum reports that ferry operators quickly ruled that out. citing that a car falling off in the middle of a lake would likely have created noticeable signs and drawn attention.

At this stage. the explanation drawing the most attention is that the Camaro may have been driven onto the lake during winter conditions and fallen through the ice.. With that scenario. the concern becomes even sharper: it raises the possibility that someone could have been nearby when the car went under.

Misryoum says detectives are now hoping that tracking down the owner, or a relative, will help connect the recovered Camaro to its missing chapter.

Whether the incident was an accident or something else entirely, the case is a reminder that long-buried evidence can resurface, and that solving it often depends on details that only families, former owners, or local knowledge can provide.
