Broward Tax Collector Settlement Ends Misconduct Probe

Broward Tax – Misryoum reports Broward’s Tax Collector agreed to a reduced penalty, settling a probe tied to 2024 campaign resource-use allegations.

A Broward County ethics probe tied to the 2024 campaign of its Tax Collector has been closed after the top official agreed to a reduced penalty, ending months of scrutiny into how government resources were used.

Misryoum reports that Abiodun “Abbey” Ajayi reached a settlement with the Broward Office of the Inspector General. agreeing to pay $4. 000 to resolve allegations that she improperly used public resources during her run for office.. The agreement concludes an earlier complaint that sought a higher financial penalty and a formal reprimand.

The case centered on whether campaign activity was linked to Ajayi’s county employment at the time.. According to the Inspector General’s findings. investigators alleged she engaged in campaign-related work while still serving in a county role. including podcast appearances recorded from her workplace and the use of her official email account for campaign matters.. One appearance was reportedly conducted during regular business hours without approved leave. while another occurred after hours but included a fundraising appeal inside a government building.

In particular. investigators described multiple instances in which Ajayi’s county email was used to coordinate campaign activity. ranging from sharing materials to setting up media appearances.. Misryoum notes that the complaint did not allege criminal wrongdoing. but it concluded the conduct ran against local ethics rules that prohibit using government resources for political purposes.. The findings also referenced potential conflicts with state limitations on campaigning while on duty and on soliciting contributions in government facilities.

This settlement matters beyond one officeholder because it highlights a persistent tension in U.S. elections: when public employees seek elected positions, the boundary between official duties and campaign work can become a flashpoint for ethics enforcement.

Ajayi admitted liability as part of the deal. Her lawyer argued the violations were inadvertent and framed the issue as an error made while navigating the demands of public employment during what he described as a first-time campaign.

Ajayi became Broward’s first independently elected Tax Collector in 2024. following Amendment 10’s requirement that multiple constitutional offices be chosen by voters.. Misryoum reports she won the seat in a three-way Democratic primary and then took office as Broward transitioned the Tax Collector role into a standalone elected function. rather than one handled within the county’s broader Records. Taxes and Treasury operation.

The agreement closes the ethics dispute without escalating to the harsher penalties originally sought. but it leaves a clear record of the kinds of campaign practices regulators say can violate rules.. For voters. it is another reminder that the enforcement of election-related ethics often turns on documentation. timing. and how public resources are used during the run-up to ballots.
