British Forces Join Multinational War-Game in Poland to Prepare for Post-War Ukraine Security

British military personnel and Royal Air Force jets are deploying to Poland to participate in a large-scale multinational war-game aimed at preparing allied forces to provide security guarantees for Ukraine once the war with Russia concludes.

Scheduled to run from November 9 to 22, the exercise—designated Exercise Koalicja—will be co-led by the United Kingdom and France. The drill brings together 2,800 military personnel from 11 different nations and marks the inaugural operation of its kind conducted by the Multinational Force Ukraine, the military wing established under the Coalition of the Willing following a summit in July.

The deployment is designed to rehearse complex logistical operations, including the coordinated movement of troops and vital supplies such as food and fuel. Approximately 300 British service members will participate, drawing primarily from the Army’s 7 Brigade, historically known as the Desert Rats. Overhead, RAF Typhoons and a Voyager refuelling aircraft will fly sorties to simulate the protocols required to reassure and secure commercial aviation once Ukrainian airspace eventually reopens.

Defense Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized the practical objective of the deployment. “This exercise shows the UK is stepping up, alongside France and our allies, to prepare for the day peace comes to Ukraine,” Streeting said, adding that the initiative represents a tangible force ready to assist Kyiv when fighting stops rather than a purely theoretical contingency.

Lieutenant General Tom Bateman, a British three-star general commanding the Multinational Force Ukraine, noted the strategic value of the drills. “This exercise will show that the Multinational Force Ukraine is a real, capable, readily deployable force that represents a serious commitment from Coalition of the Willing nations to Ukraine’s long-term stability and security,” Bateman stated, emphasizing that the multinational unit will continually increase its readiness to ensure Ukrainian armed forces can effectively deter future aggression.

The broader multinational maneuver incorporates contributions from 11 participating countries: Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Among the specialized operations planned during the exercise, Turkish forces stationed in Istanbul will rehearse maritime mine clearance procedures aimed at restoring safe commercial shipping lanes to Ukrainian ports.
