British divers locate WWI US Coast Guard shipwreck

A British diving team has discovered the wreckage of the USCGC Tampa, which sank during World War I, off the coast of Cornwall.
The elusive wreckage of the USCGC Tampa, a vessel lost to a devastating German attack during the First World War, has finally been identified deep off the coast of England.. A specialized British diving team known as the Gasperados located the remains of the ship resting more than 300 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 50 miles off the coast of Newquay in Cornwall.
This discovery marks the end of a long mystery surrounding the vessel’s final resting place. The wreckage serves as a somber reminder of the maritime casualties that occurred during the heat of global conflict in 1918.
Identifying the site is historically significant because it provides closure for families and offers researchers a tangible link to one of the most tragic chapters in the history of the United States Coast Guard.
The vessel went down in the Bristol Channel after being struck by a torpedo fired from a German submarine.. The impact was catastrophic, causing the ship to sink in less than three minutes and resulting in the loss of all 131 people on board, including Coast Guard members, U.S.. Navy personnel, and British civilians.
This event remains recorded as the single deadliest loss of American naval life during the entirety of World War I.. For decades, the location of the vessel remained unknown, turning the site into a silent underwater memorial for the 111 Coast Guard crew members who perished alongside their counterparts.
To achieve this breakthrough, the Gasperados Dive Team committed to three years of intensive research and conducted 10 separate expeditions.. The team sought guidance from the Coast Guard Historian’s Office in 2023, utilizing historical records and technical imagery to verify the identity of the wreckage.
Admiral Kevin Lunday noted that the sacrifice of those aboard the Tampa exemplifies the enduring legacy of the Coast Guard. Officials are now coordinating plans for further underwater research to properly document the site and honor the memory of those lost.
By pinpointing the location of the ship, the discovery transitions the Tampa from a piece of lost history into a protected site of remembrance, ensuring that the service and final moments of the crew are not forgotten by future generations.
