Brad Marchand Injury Adds To Panthers’ Early Season Struggles

Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand is sidelined with a left leg injury sustained during Tuesday’s win over the Los Angeles Kings.

The Florida Panthers’ West Coast trip has taken a grim turn. With 52.6 seconds remaining in the second period of Tuesday night’s 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings, forward Brad Marchand collided with the right post after being struck in the face by a stick from Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke.

Marchand twisted as he fell, his left leg bending awkwardly beneath him. The 38-year-old remained on the ice for several minutes under the care of an athletic trainer. Eventually. teammates Brady Tkachuk and Niko Mikkola helped him to the bench. as Marchand could put no weight on his injured leg. He was subsequently helped back to the dressing room and did not return for the third period.

Panthers head coach Paul Maurice provided little clarity on the timeline for his veteran forward, noting that the team would have him looked at on Thursday.

This injury marks a significant blow for a franchise already grappling with a thinning lineup. Just days ago, center Aleksander Barkov suffered a left leg injury during an overtime loss in San Jose on October 1. Maurice confirmed earlier on Tuesday that Barkov is expected to be out for six to eight weeks. though he will not require surgery.

For a team that has spent the last two seasons defending Stanley Cup titles, the familiar sting of injury has returned early. The Panthers are still managing the fallout from a previous season where their title defense was effectively scuttled by medical absences.

“I mean. we have a little experience with Sasha going down. so it wasn’t quite as shocking the second time it happened. ” Maurice said. “We know we have good depth. And there’s a threshold for any team. a number of injuries you just can’t survive. and we passed that early last year. So, real good resolve here. The tank is deep right now. We had a big summer off, so we’re strong.”.

Marchand. who is in his third season with Florida after being traded from the Boston Bruins in March 2025. has become a core component of the Panthers’ recent success. His collision on Tuesday occurred during a sequence involving Brandt Clarke. who was assessed a four-minute double-minor penalty for the play. Clarke had already been penalized earlier in the same period for interference against Eetu Luostarinen. While Luostarinen was shaken up by a cross-check—sustaining what the team characterized as a stinger—he was cleared to return to the game.

As the team prepares for further medical evaluation on Thursday, the focus shifts to whether the Panthers’ depth can withstand the loss of two franchise cornerstones during the opening week of the season.
