Blue Jays squander lead as Rays win late again

Blue Jays – Toronto lost late after a near-win at Tropicana Field as the Rays’ rally overturned an eight-inning lead.

A late bullpen slip turned a promising night for the Blue Jays into a second straight loss to the Rays at Tropicana Field.

Toronto looked poised to steal a stressful win after taking an early hold of the game. but once the ball was handed to Tyler Rogers in the eighth inning with the lead. the margin disappeared.. Rogers entered with a season ERA that had been remarkably low and had not allowed a run since mid-April. yet a late string of hits denied the Blue Jays what would have been a pivotal one-run moment.

Rogers’ outing was the difference between control and chaos, and it left Toronto with a painful flip in momentum as the Rays moved ahead in the late stages.

Before the bullpen drama, Kevin Gausman gave the Blue Jays a foundation to build on.. He worked through six innings of two-run baseball. limiting the damage to six hits and a single walk while adding three strikeouts.. It wasn’t a high-swing-and-miss night compared with the kind of punch he can provide. but the most encouraging sign for Toronto came from the numbers around his fastball. including an uptick in average velocity.

Still, the near-win quickly slipped away once late offense failed to materialize for Toronto.

George Springer returned to the lineup for the first time after a foul ball caused trouble with his broken left toe. but he was held hitless in five at-bats.. Kazuma Okamoto did provide a bright spot by launching his 10th home run of the season. but the Blue Jays did not score after the fifth inning as the game tightened into the kind of contest where small details decide outcomes.

For Toronto, the late innings also came with operational lessons.. Catcher Brandon Valenzuela missed on two early challenges before drawing a key walk in the fifth. only to be caught when trying to advance shortly afterward.. With Alejandro Kirk unavailable and the team managing other catcher-related pieces. the Blue Jays continue to feel that depth matters in close games.

Elsewhere in the organization, Tuesday’s schedule carried both baseball and medical uncertainty.. Vladimir Guerrero Jr.. received a partial day reset after extensive recent playing time and later appeared as a pinch hitter before moving to first base.. Jose Berrios was also set for an MRI after experiencing more soreness than usual following a rehab start. keeping questions around pitching health front and center for Toronto.

For the Blue Jays, this loss is more than just another result in the standings. When the offense stalls and late leads vanish, it exposes the thin margin teams can’t afford during a season-long grind, especially while injuries and rehab timelines shape every rotation decision.

With Wednesday’s game looming, Eric Lauer and Patrick Corbin are set to be stretched as Toronto manages its pitching options, and Corbin will take the mound as the Blue Jays look to avoid a sweep at Tropicana Field.
