Bears weigh Miller Moss future after QB roster set

Chicago’s QB room is set with Caleb Williams, Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum, while undrafted rookie Miller Moss is seen as a long-term development project.
A new name is entering the Chicago Bears’ quarterback conversation, even as the team’s active roster picture appears largely settled for this season.
With starter Caleb Williams leading the way. Tyson Bagent serving as the primary backup and Case Keenum positioned as the veteran third option. the Bears are also working with undrafted rookie Miller Moss from Louisville.. The plan. as described by the organization. is less about an immediate roster spot and more about building Moss through developmental reps. particularly via the practice squad.
Moss comes to the Bears with a clear sense of why he chose them.. Despite the lack of a guaranteed path to make the team this year. he selected Chicago over “a number of teams” because he believed it offered the best long-term opportunity to reach the league’s highest level.. In his explanation. Moss pointed to the coaching staff. the franchise’s direction. and existing relationships with players in the building as key factors in his decision.
That background helps illuminate the context of the move.. Before transferring to Louisville for his final season. Moss was at USC. where he served as Caleb Williams’ backup in 2022 and 2023.. Moss said the two have been friends since they were 17. adding a personal dimension to a football connection that already existed long before either became Bears teammates.
Even if Moss does not earn a roster spot this season. the Bears’ approach reflects a broader belief that investing in quarterbacks can pay dividends later—either by turning a young passer into a future backup option or by creating a tradeable asset.. Offensive coordinator Press Taylor framed that thinking around the idea that a deeper quarterback room can increase flexibility. and he suggested the team would not be disappointed to have multiple players capable of contributing.
“A player like this has potential to stick around in the league and potentially play. which is our mission. ” Taylor said.. He added that having a quarterback room filled with players who can perform is a “great problem to have. ” reinforcing that the organization views development as part of the on-field process. not an afterthought.
The Bears’ offseason quarterback evaluation also included an additional audition at the rookie minicamp level.. Western Kentucky quarterback Maverick McIvor was present for a tryout. a reminder that while the current roster depth is defined. competition for developmental spots still remains part of the club’s broader talent search.
For Moss. the immediate reality is that he is arriving at a time when the Bears’ top quarterback roles are already accounted for.. Yet the decision to prioritize long-term growth—rather than chasing a short-term roster outcome—suggests the team is treating the next steps as a structured pathway: learning the system. getting consistent practice-time development. and positioning Moss for the next opening that typically comes through offseason turnover. performance changes. or evolving roster needs.
